OSHIMOCOFFEE & PANINI
All stories

We almost covered up this floor. Here's why we didn't.

When we got the keys, the kopitiam was gone. The tables were gone. The noise was gone. But the floor was still there, and it was beautiful.

Grey and white Peranakan tiles, wall to wall. A little flower pattern repeating across the whole shop, like it was waiting for someone to notice.

The easy option

Rip them up. Lay something new and plain. Done in a week. Nobody would ever know.

We couldn't do it. Think about how many mornings happened on this floor. Years of kopi, chairs scraping, neighbours catching up before work. You don't just cover that up.

So we flipped the plan

Most cafés pick a look, then find a floor to match. We started with the floor and made everything else fit around it.

Design plan for Oshimo: navy wall, red seal, oak tables over the Peranakan tiles
The plan.

The navy wall picks up the darkest grey in the tiles.
The light oak warms the whole room up.
The big red 押 gives your eyes somewhere to land.

The Oshimo room during fit-out, with the original tiles still in place
Where we're at now. Tiles: still here.

Do us a favour

When we open this November, grab a coffee, sit down, and look at your feet for a second.

That floor was here long before us. We just made it a nicer place to sit.

Come try it this November

Mon to Sat, 8am to 6pm, on the corner of Seri Gembira Avenue, Kuchai Lama.
